Ames wants to be test site for fiber-optic network
The City of Ames plans to submit an application to be a test market for a high-speed fiber optic network offered by the Internet company Google Inc.
Brian Phillips of the Ames City Manager's office says the application is due March 26.
Google Fiber is an initiative to find test markets for a system bringing residential Internet speeds of over 1 gigabit per second — or 100 times faster than current home connections. Google is looking for towns with populations ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 to act as pilot cities.
Phillips says because of the emphasis on research at Iowa State University and the number of people in Ames interested in technology, he believes Ames would make an excellent test market.
