CES 2012: Wilocity Announces Marketing Strategy and Product Availability

Wilocity is an Israel-based start-up that has been aggressive in pursuing the WiGig or 802.11ad silicon market. At CES, it has announced a marketing strategy for its 60 GHz solution that emphasizes the ability to use the technology at work, on the go, or at home. Demonstrations included a notebook PC sending an HD movie, a YouTube video, and a PowerPoint presentation wirelessly from a notebook to a PC monitor. Another compared the time required to download a very large file via both 802.11n and Wilocity’s solution. While the 802.11n transfer took over 20 minutes, Wilocity’s takes under 15 seconds. The company’s first solution, a half mini-card with discrete 802.11ad and 802.11n/Bluetooth chips, should be available in mid-2012.

Wilocity has a few marketing challenges. The first is to gain design wins and drive down costs for WiGig silicon, which will be especially important in the cost-sensitive consumer electronics market. The other is to tout its advantages versus competing wireless HD silicon vendors that have been on the market for three to four years, including WHDI and WirelessHD.
