New York City is one of my favorite places. I've visited several times, and have never had a bad experience. That's why I was so excited when Matt Rohr contacted me early this year to let me know that SWUGNYC was a go. It appears that I'll have another good reason to visit the city soon.
It just got better and better after that. When I asked Matt where exactly in NYC the group would be based, he told me Manhattan.
Times Square, Central Park, Penn Station, Wall Street, The Chrysler Building, The Empire State Building, Rupert's Deli - yep, Manhattan's the place to be.
As if that wasn't enough, when the first meeting was posted at the SWUGN website, my attention was drawn to the meeting address - 273 Bowery Street. You can't get any more "smack-dab" in the the middle of Manhattan than that. It also conjures up memories of Leo Gorcey and the Bowery Boys (no - I'm not old enough to have seen the movies originally, but I watched the reruns as a kid), and the 1949 cartoon Bowery Bugs ("you want your palm red?" - lol). The Bowery has a long history, not always pleasant, but since the 1990's the area has made quite a comeback. It's even got a Whole Foods Market!
The first meeting of SWUGNYC was held last night, and while the attendance was low, the excitement was high. Matt and Val will do a great job for SolidWorks users in NYC, and I do expect membership to increase markedly - after all we're talking about a city of over 8 million people. Matt is a NYC resident, so he knows the challenge of getting around the city - but vows to choose meeting sites that are easily accesible to Manhattan residents.
If you're a SolidWorks user in the NYC area, you know that there are more transportation options available than almost anywhere in the country. Hop in a cab, take the subway, or even walk to the next meeting of NYCSWUG. You'll get terrific technical information, get to hang out with fellow New Yorkers, have some great food, and maybe even walk out with some prizes. You'll also get the satisfaction of knowing that you are a SolidWorks user in the best city in the whole world.
