Security concerns are a fact of life today and improved audio/video surveillance is extremely important for both private businesses and public entities. As the security/surveillance market transitions to digital from legacy analog-based systems, new capabilities and benefits are helping to spur market growth. High capacity hard drives are one of the leading contributing technologies responsible for the transition to digital based systems that need to handle large amounts of data and the deployment of advanced software to analyze high resolution images.

Higher resolution video greatly improves image clarity and the effectiveness of surveillance equipment, but also requires very large amounts of storage. For example, an 8-megapixel camera can produce one terabyte of data in just three days. Even with strides in video compression, more cameras will result in an increase in video data coupled with the fact that more data is generated per camera than ever before. High capacity storage is becoming an industry-enabling design element necessary to sustain a workable digital solution.

Western Digital was the first to market with a 2 TB drive designed for surveillance. This ground-breaking capacity point enables surveillance systems with two or more cameras to record high levels of clarity (30 frames per second) at a broad range of resolution settings while storing 30 days or more of video footage. When compared to standard low resolution video, high resolution video provides far greater detail which can greatly aid in identifying, capturing and prosecuting a security threat.

The video surveillance market revenues are forecasted to grow from $15.5 billion in 2006, to $46 billion by 2013 according to a study by ABI Research. In addition to having AV-class reliability engineered for 24X7 video streaming, WD’s AV-GP high capacity drives enable higher resolution for improved surveillance and is one reason why this market segment is set to explode as security needs increase around the world.
