Energy News: Oil shale and tar sands aren't exactly "alternative" energy sources in the non-fossil sense, but they are plentiful here in the United States. A new report from the Department of Energy explains the emerging technology used to harvest these sources and documents 27 companies and individual researchers working on possible approaches. Explained the authors: "If commercially developed, shale oil and bitumen from tar sands could contribute nearly three million barrels per day to reduce oil imports, improve energy security, and fuel economic growth."
