***Editor’s Note: We’re starting new weekly section called “I Became An Engineer” that will run every friday. To share you story email kasey.panetta@advantagemedia.com***
This week’s story comes to us from ECN reader Eric Swensen:
There are probably three things that made me want to be an engineer besides the reasons mentioned in your article.
1) My uncle went to engineering school and became an engineer during my middle school years. I always tried to do what he did. So, since he became an engineer, I thought I would like to do that, too.
2) I was young, but still remember the excitement of the Apollo space program and watching the rockets blast off. The actual moon walks were kind of boring to me since the video and audio was so bad and I really didn’t understand the significance. Still, watching those rockets go up was really exciting.
3) Montgomery Scott on Star Trek. As a kid–and even now–he was always my favorite character. His love of technical manuals got me interested in reading technical manuals and actually building some of the things I read about. That, and he got to work in space with Captain Kirk and Mr Spock. How cool would that be!
Hope you enjoy my short little list. There are other reasons, of course, like making good money and offering the chance to change the world with the right invention but the above are the biggest reasons.
