Linnea BrushWith ongoing interest in micro fuel cell development, what are some of the more promising technologies for portable power applications? Darnell’s Power Forum will highlight a number of trends in the “alternative” energy storage market, including a paper from Johnson Research and Development/Excellatron Solid State titled, “Novel Micro Power Source Based on Fuel Cell Technology.” Lonnie Johnson has already developed an all-solid state engine that offers maximum theoretical efficiency available from an engine operating between two temperatures, similar to a fuel cell. Unlike a fuel cell, however, the engine is a closed system that is scaleable and can supply power for Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS).

DPF ’10 will have several presentations with implications for portable power applications, including:

• Power Management for Embedded Microcontrollers
• Chip and System-Level Power Considerations for Energy-Efficient Embedded Designs
• Perpetually Powered RF Pedometer Powered by Micro-Energy Cells Combined with Energy Harvesting
• Nano to Zero – Implementing a Low Power Wireless Sensor Node with Zero Sleep Power
• Battery Support Supercapacitors Extend Battery Performance, Life and Reduce Cost

The D&D bracer is a fairly quick, fun, nerdy LilyPad project. The final product is a wearable bracer with a display that will randomly generate numbers between 1 and 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20, or 100 in response to arm movement, so it can effectively replace all of the dice in your bag for a D&D session.

Sustainable?
Sustainable?

I'd like some genius to define sustainable. Could we count something that we can keep doing for 100 billion years - beyond the death of the Universe as we currently understand such things - as sustainable? How about a billion years?
