With ongoing interest in micro fuel cell development, what are some of the more promising technologies for portable power applications? Darnell’s Power Forum will highlight a number of trends in the “alternative” energy storage market, including a paper from Johnson Research and Development/Excellatron Solid State titled, “Novel Micro Power Source Based on Fuel Cell Technology.” Lonnie Johnson has already developed an all-solid state engine that offers maximum theoretical efficiency available from an engine operating between two temperatures, similar to a fuel cell. Unlike a fuel cell, however, the engine is a closed system that is scaleable and can supply power for Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS).
