It is often said the Democrat Party likes to tax "anything that moves". The present Congress is preparing to add to that ". . . or releases carbon dioxide" (which includes every living creature on Earth) by way of the proposed "Cap and Trade" tax legislation being prepared to deal with the scientifically unproven "Global Warming" from carbon dioxide (CO2) greenhouse gas. They seem to have accepted a 'consensus' of members of an 'international' panel (IPCC) composed mostly of politicos (only 20% had any scientific background) along with speculation based largely on statistically invalid, erroneous, and intentionally contrived ('Climategate') temperature data. It was reinforced in a conspiratoral Al Gore Hollywood movie (An Inconvenient Truth) which was adjudged as "misleading" and "erroneous" by a British court. They appear to refuse to believe (or even read) a petition presented to them that was signed by over 30,000 independent, qualified, and credentialed: scientists, engineers, chemists, physicists, meteorologists, educators, researchers, climatologists, medical doctors, statisticians, oceanographers, geologists, economists, and historians (more than 9000 had PhDs). The petition reads as follows:
"We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997 and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind. There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the forseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth." (www.petitionproject.org)
Their petition is based on many scientific facts, only one of which is that CO2 is only 5% of Global Warming Greenhouse Gases (GWGG) with water being 90%, and fossil fuel combustion is responsible for only one tenth of that, giving 0.5% of all GWGG is CO2. Another is that without carbon dioxide in our atmosphere and oceans, there would be no vegetation and hence probably no life at all on Earth. They don't tell you that the oceans of the world hold about 50 times more CO2 than the atmosphere, so if the CO2 level in the atmosphere goes up 100%, the oceans will absorb it until the there is only a 2% increase in the atmosphere. This ocean absorption is the reason it is estimated that if all the fossil fuels in the world today were burned, the atmospheric CO2 level would only double from its present 0.1% of the atmosphere to about 0.2% (The Deniers, by Lawrence Solomon . . . see my review at Amazon.com).
Since those taxes will simply be tacked on to consumer products, it is estimated the bill (Waxman-Markey) will result in about an $80,000,000,000 increase in yearly electricity costs (www.heartland.org) and proportional amounts to things like: gasoline, air/bus/train fares, bakery items (bread), soft drinks, beer/wine/booze, fire extinguishers, dry ice (solid CO2), greenhouse vegetable/flowers (they use a lot of CO2 to promote growth), and finally they could place a head tax on all humans and other living creatures because collectively, they breathe out approximately 15,000,000 tons every day.
People should communicate with their Congresspersons and tell them to stop playing pseudoscientific political scare games with our economy . . . and to vote "No" on "Cap and Trade" and the Kyoto Accord.
