The 25th International Trade Fair for Electronic Components, Systems, and Applications (i.e., electronica 2012) starts next week (or now, depending on when you see this), so ECN thought it fitting to interview one of the leading OEM vendors, Standex Electronics about industry trends, especially as it relates to sensors.

ECN: Has your sensor business increased, decreased or remained steady over the last 12 months?

Standex: Sensor business has increased over the past 12 months.

ECN: Sensors is obviously a very broad product category. Have you seen a spike in demand for any particular type of sensor over the last six months or so?

Standex: Standex-Meder has observed a spike in Level Sensors and Fluid Control needs over the past 6 months.

ECN: Following up to your answer for #2, what do you feel are the primary factors contributing to the need for these types of sensors?

Standex: This spike is driven by increased factory automation, new industrial applications and requirements, and new automotive standards that must be met.

ECN: What, if any, changes do you see driving design engineer needs over the next 12-18 months, as it relates to sensors in general, or any specific type?

Standex: There will be an increased interest in “green” applications and alternative energy, as well as in e-mobility, fluid control, industrial automation, and new needs from the automotive industry.

ECN: Will you have any new products at electronica? If so, can you share any of that information with us now?

Standex: Standex-Meder will be showing the new KT and UMS Reed Relays, MK27 Reed Sensors and Magnet (set), the LS05 Level Sensor, and the ORD 329 Reed Switch. We will additionally be issuing a press release for Standex-Meder for Electronica, in which additional information about all these will be included.
