Fighting Climate Change by Turning CO2 to Stone  11/17/2009 11:00:00 AM
INL scientists Rob Podgorney and Travis McLing While politicians debate the best ways to cut global carbon dioxide emissions, researchers at Idaho National Laboratory's Center for Advanced Energy Studies are charging ahead on a strategy to defuse the CO2 the world already produces.

Coffee chain adopts LED lighting  11/12/2009 4:13:00 PM
A certain eco-conscious purveyor of roasted beans (rhymes with dar-nucks) has announced plans to adopt solid state lighting in more than 8,000 stores by the end of next year. Utilizing GE lighting solutions, Starbucks has already “converted” more than 1,000 U.S. locations, with plans to address the international market in March 2010.

EPRI Launches Power Transmission Efficiency Initiative  11/6/2009 10:00:00 AM
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) logoThe Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) disclosed plans today for an industry-wide “transmission efficiency” demonstration collaborative that will identify technologies leading to greater efficiency in the bulk power system, an increase in system utilization and a reduction in line and equipment losses.

Zero emission hybrid buses unveiled in Washington  11/4/2009 10:12:00 AM
EcoRide-3QCSFront-webProterra, a heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer, and Altair Nanotechnologies, a provider of energy-storage systems, recently unveiled a zero emission hybrid-electric bus. The vehicle is purportedly the only American-made electric rapid-charge hybrid bus that meets California's zero emission rules. At 35 feet long, the hybrid is 10 feet shorter than comparable diesel buses (which feature an engine compartment).

Tesla sets new distance record  10/30/2009 11:14:00 AM
Tesla-Roadster-webAffluent hipsters have reason to celebrate—the Tesla Roadster has set a new distance record, going 313 miles on a single charge. This demolishes even Tesla's own specs, which list it as 244 miles per charge. The record occurred during Australia's Global Green Challenge event, an 1,864-mile (3,000 km) exhibition...

Purify the air with CFLs  10/28/2009 9:46:00 AM
When the incandescent ban becomes absolute (2014), Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) will be the only game in town. Incandescents will be barred from manufacture, and LEDs won’t be “market-ready” (the DOE is pushing for 2025). Sadly, in its present form, the CFL isn’t a worthy successor to the Edison bulb.

Perseas Platform designed for CdTe processing  10/26/2009 1:06:00 PM
The Perseas product platform, from BTU International, was designed for the processing of Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) thin film photovoltaic cells. The platform is scalable from R&D to pilot and to production-sized units. The Perseas-CA is designed for the chlorine annealing process while the Perseas-CF is for the contact formation process.

Poll: Fewer Americans believe in Global Warming  10/23/2009 5:14:00 PM
The percentage of Americans who believe in “global warming” took a nosedive in the last year. According to a Pew Research poll, 57% of those surveyed feel the Earth is warming—a sharp decline from a year ago (77%). Just over a third (36%) attribute it to “human activity”, and politically, just 53% of independents (down from 71%) see solid evidence of global warming.

TV regulation battle gets personal  10/23/2009 12:21:00 PM
A quick update on the TV regulation battle in California: this past Wednesday, a joint hearing was called by the utilities companies.  Words were exchanged, claims were made, and common ground seemed ever more elusive. Essentially, what we have here is a presumption of “guilt”...
