China will appeal a World Trade Organization ruling that ordered it to ease restrictions on imports of movies, music and books in a case brought by Washington, a Commerce Ministry spokesman said Monday. "We are actively preparing the documents to appeal," spokesman Yao Jian said at a news conference. Yao gave no details of the grounds for appeal but the government last week denied that it obstructed imports.
Scientists at IBM Research and the California Institute of Technology announced a scientific advancement that could be a major breakthrough in enabling the semiconductor industry to pack more power and speed into tiny computer chips, while making them more energy efficient and less expensive to manufacture.
Scientists have discovered a gene that helps a mother and daughter stay alert on about six hours sleep a night, two hours less than the rest of their family needs. It's believed to be a very rare mutation, not an excuse for the rest of us who stay up too late. But the finding, published in Friday's edition of the journal Science, offers a new lead to study how sleep affects health.
Since swine flu first emerged in April, it has sparked panic, vaccine production and now, a video game. In an effort to further raise awareness, Dutch researchers have created a game that challenges players to control a new pandemic. "It is actually what is happening now, what is happening in the real world," said Albert Osterhaus, head of virology at the Erasmus Medical Center, who designed "The Great Flu" game with colleagues.
The recent 2Q09 earnings results of the world’s top five handset vendors by volume showed a quarter-on-quarter growth of 12.1% in shipment numbers, led by LG, Samsung and Nokia. With channel inventory reduced to more normal levels, prospects for continued quarterly growth in 2H09 have improved.
This is quite a nice device. Available in capacities from 0.5 TB to 1.5 TB, the drive lets you maintain a real-time backup that can handle a fire (1,550° for ½ hour) and what happens after once the Fire Department gets there (immersion in 10 feet of fresh water or salt water for up to 3 days).
Extreme Engineering Solutions is shipping XCalibur1331, a conduction- or air-cooled, 6U VME solution featuring Freescale Semiconductor’s dual-core MPC8640D processor. The module is suitable for ruggedized systems requiring high bandwidth processing and low power consumption. The 8640D performs with
The e-publishing market may be following the same steps as its relatives in the music industry as Sony announced Wednesday that it will adopt the open ePub format for its Reader e-book readers. The move could signal the beginning of a new phase of e-publishing for consumers and businesses.
Dilas announced its high-power vertical diode laser stacked arrays available at 9xxnm (915 nm, 940 nm and 980 nm) wavelength with 150 W output power, continuous-wave (CW) per bar. The vertical stacks suit diode pump solid-state laser, materials processing, defense and medical applications requiring
Intended for use with Anritsu’s MG3700A Vector Signal Generator and MS269xA Signal Analyzer Series, the MX370110A LTE TDD IQproducer creates 3GPP LTE TDD waveform patterns. Its GUI shows the waveform format, including location, physical channels, and the power profile for the frame.
STEC, a solid-state drive (SSD) supplier to several large storage OEMs, is expanding its product lineup with enterprise-ready multi-level cell (MLC) drives with capacities up to 750 GB for a lower price than the single-level cell (SLC) versions currently in use for most enterprise applications.
U.S. video game equipment and software sales fell 29 percent in July to $848.9 million, research group NPD said on Thursday, as the gaming industry limps through the economic downturn. Hardware sales fell 37 percent from a year ago, while software sales slid 26 percent, NPD said. Sales of video game accessories declined 12 percent.
The deadline for online applications for the first round of the U.S. government's $7.2 billion program to provide broadband access to all Americans was extended to August 20 from August 14 because of technical problems caused by the high number of applicants. Applicants who started the process using the online Easygrants System will be
In the push to increase bandwidth, range and sensitivity in wide bandwidth systems, multi-antenna and multi-sensor arrays are becoming increasingly popular. With each antenna or sensor requiring its own signal chain, many analog-to-digital converter (ADC) suppliers are integrating multiple high-speed ADCs into a single IC design.
Filters are common in electronic equipment. From antialiasing filters used before A to D converters, to reconstruction filters after D to A converters, to intermediate frequency (IF) strips applications for filters are everywhere. The common thread is the desire to pass some frequencies, while blocking others. An ideal filter will have an amplitude response that is unity (or at a fixed gain) for the frequencies of interest
