A lithium-ion battery electrode described this week in the journal Nature can deliver electricity several times faster than other such batteries. It could be particularly useful where rapid power bursts are needed, such as for laser weapons or hybrid race cars. Test batteries based on the new electrode--developed by Gerbrand Ceder, a professor of materials science at MIT--can be discharged in 10 seconds.
In 2007, Al Gore shared the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to “build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change.” In his Oscar-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, Gore screeched, “The scientists are virtually screaming from the rooftops now. The debate is over! There’s no longer any debate in the scientific community about this.”
Encapsulated in a thermally-conductive MIL-SPEC silicon rubber compound for immunity to shock, vibration and moisture, Absopulse Electronics’ PDC 500 delivers a nominal 500 W. The device uses push-pull topology to deliver 12 VDC, 24 VDC, 48 VDC or 110 VDC from a 24 VDC, 48 VDC or 125 VDC supply voltage.
Offering up to 54 general purpose I/O pins and a 25 MIPS 8051 CPU, the C8051F7xx family of microcontrollers from Silicon Laboratories incorporates a touch-sense on-chip peripheral that uses a capacitance-to-digital converter with a 40-µs acquisition time. Features include capability for up to 32 touch sensing inputs, with wake-on-touch for low-power standby as well as an API library for all common touch sense configurations such as virtual buttons, wheels and sliders.
The GT-841078 series of interchangeable blade Wall Plug-In power supplies from GlobTek meets EISA Standards with Interchangeable Blades. Supplies are Class II, Double-Enforced Insulation Mechanical Configurations, and regulated output voltage of 5V @ 1A for 5W of continuous power via a USB jack
A central packet switch (CPS) from IDT purportedly optimizes port count, performance, and power consumption for up to six 4x ports of 10G connectivity. The 80KSW0006 incorporates in-house fourth-generation IDT SerDes and S-RIO core switch technology to address signal integrity and scalability. The new device supports S-RIO packet switching
Based on Freescale’s i.MX37 microcontroller, the TRITON-TX37 system-on-module from Direct Insight is a 200-pin SODIMM format PCB that is optimized for low-power media player applications. The 26 mm x 68 mm device operates from a single 3.0 to 5.5v supply and includes 128 MB of mobile DDR SDRAM, 128 MB of NAND Flash, with supporting peripherals for power management and Ethernet.
Faced with a steep decline in sales, chip maker National Semiconductor Corp. said Wednesday it will eliminate more than one-quarter of its work force, or 1,725 jobs. The company said it will immediately begin trimming 850 positions worldwide in its product, marketing, manufacturing and support businesses. An additional 875 jobs will be lost with the shuttering of facilities in Suzhou, China, and Arlington, Texas, over the next few quarters. National Semiconductor has about 6,500 employees.
Lockheed Martin debuted an advanced robotic exoskeleton designed to augment Soldiers’ strength and endurance and prevent their premature fatigue. The Human Universal Load Carrier (HULC) exoskeleton, introduced at the Association of the United States’ Army Winter Symposium in Fort Lauderdale, FL, will meet future mobility and sustainment needs of Warfighters by providing strength and survivability.
It’s a fact that consumers want end products that give them the most user interaction. Two of the most popular examples on the market are Apple’s iPhone and Nintendo’s Wii. These end products serve very different purposes to their desired consumers, but share electronic advances that make these products, amongst others, an interactive experience for the user. In this month's Industry Focus, we talked to six different companies
Suiting industrial automation, medical, avionics, marine, and automotive equipment, TEKO Enclosures’ TEKMAG handheld cases are manufactured in TEKNIUM, a magnesium-based alloy. The 6.181" × 3.889" × 1.236" devices utilize a contoured design and consist of 3 die-cast parts: top, base, and battery compartment lid. Three standard models offer
For those who’ve never been, Electronics West is one of seven shows (including EW, Medical Design and Manufacturing West, Pacific Design and Manufacturing West, Automation Technology Expo West, Plastec West, West Pack, and Green Manufacturing West) co-located within the Anaheim Convention Center. One badge earned admittance to all, so from 10-12 February, I “attended” each.
Enabling engineers to prototype a full system-on-a-chip design, the Fusion Embedded Development Kit from Actel features the ActelFusion mixed-signal 1.5M gate M1AFS1500-FGG484 FPGA that supports a variety of processors, including license-free versions of the ARM Cortex-M1 and Core8051. Using the kit, designers can integrate custom logic and programmable analog features into the system using tools such as
Encapsulated in an aluminum enclosure sealed to IP68/NEMA 6P specifications, Stealth's Model TT-840 LCD monitor has an 8.4" screen and is designed to survive demanding work environments. The waterproof sunlight-readable LED-backlit display has a brightness of 1,000 nits and an IR touchscreen.
Including 128-MS (256-MB) onboard memory, Strategic Test’s UF2-4140 and UF3-4142 14-bit digitizer PCI cards can sample at 400 MS/s on one channel. The UF3-4142 has 2 analog inputs and can sample at 250 MS/s on both channels simultaneously. The products use 2 digital I/O lines that can be programmed as digital inputs that are
