Even in space, batteries need to be replaced. The primary task of a spacewalk Wednesday will be to replace four batteries on one of the international space station's solar arrays. Astronauts David Wolf and Christopher Cassidy's spacewalk is scheduled be the third of Endeavour's 16-day mission to the orbiting outpost.
When Neil Armstrong stepped onto the surface of the moon, it was a first for the Soviet Union - the first time the U.S. had beaten the U.S.S.R in the space race. Forty years later, the memory of that loss of primacy still seems to sting the Russian soul. When state TV channel Rossiya reported last week on the restoration of video footage of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the account gave a lot of attention to dubious conspiracy theories that the landing was faked.

Several Chinese Internet sites and parts of popular Web portals went offline Tuesday amid tightening controls that have already left mainland Web users without access to Facebook, Twitter and other well-known social networking sites. China stepped up its crackdown on social networking sites in March over online allegations surrounding the treatment of Tibetans, and the blockages continued through the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square demonstrations and the recent ethnic riots in Xinjiang.
Addressing applications requiring high throughput and long switch life, the Model 3731 6´16 high-speed reed-relay matrix plug-in switching card for the Series 3700 System Switch/Multimeter family from Keithley Instruments has contacts that are rated for more than one billion no-load switch operations.
Robotic arm maneuvers and social networking sites are taking center stage at the international space station and space shuttle complex. The 13 space station and Endeavour crew members were awakened early Tuesday by Mission Control with the Rascal Flatts' song "Life is a Highway." Not long afterward, crew members began using the shuttle and space station's robotic arms to move a storage pallet holding three experiments from the belly of Endeavour to the outside of a Japanese laboratory at the space station.
Communications are a keystone of our information-based econonomy and society. The next-gen world of ubiquitous computing and cloud data services will rely on high-quality comms in the user interface, RF, and hard wire, to truly exist. Here are some design articles to help you in your communications design tasks.
Lawmakers in France's lower house of parliament are to start debate Tuesday on a new version of a bill aimed at cracking down on online piracy by cutting the Internet connections of those who illegally download movies and music. An earlier version of the bill was found to be unconstitutional. Legislators in the National Assembly are to debate the amended bill through Friday, but decided not to take a vote on it until they return from summer recess in September.

The control module has a USB connection and incorporates the following I/O functions: 16 digital inputs, 16 digital outputs, 2 analog outputs (6 selectable ranges each)
Intended for R&D, manufacturing, and calibration lab applications, the CL3001 calibrator from Omega features 0.0025% accuracy. The calibrator is used for temperature, DC, and pressure calibration. It also includes custom RTD and SPRT profile, RS232, USB, and IEEE-488 remote control, and NIST Certificate
The Symbian Foundation has been left with egg on its face after accidentally sanctioning what experts are calling the first text message worm in history.
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has purportedly created an Organic Light Emitting Diode that is 75% more efficient than previous models. Led by Prof. Kyung-Cheol Choi, the KAIST team discovered a new type of surface plasmon enhanced OLED. KAIST explains their finding thusly: “For surface plasmon localization, silver nanoparticles were thermally deposited in a high vacuum on cathode.
Corelis announced the availability of two product bundles for stand-alone in-system programming environments. The bundles are based on the ScanExpress family of products and are dubbed ISP-TAFP and ISP-JTAG. ISP-TAFP is capable of
