Miniature Signal Conditioning IC Enhances Optical Sensors' Proximity and Object Detection

Ecnmag.com - March 19, 2008

signal conditioning IC for optical sensingAvago Technologies today announced a miniature single-chip signal conditioning IC that is said to enhance the performance and robustness of optical sensors used for proximity or object detection in consumer and industrial applications. When used with optical proximity sensors, the APDS-9700 signal conditioning IC provides accurate and robust detection of objects in ambient light and sunlight conditions, and will allow design engineers to package more functionality into those applications where printed circuit board space is limited. This IC is packaged in an eight-pin QFN package measuring 0.55 mm (H) × 2 mm (W) × 2 mm (L). It combines the functionality of signal conditioning for proximity sensing into a single chip to reduce the number of components required and helps shorten design time to market. This signal conditioning IC targets designers of devices such as PDAs, mobile phones, handheld games, and laptop computers. Other targeted applications include industrial applications such as vending machines, industrial automation equipment, contactless switches and sanitary automation devices. The APDS-9700 IC includes a LED driver circuit, artificial light immunity, sunlight cancellation and a built-in LED stuck high protection circuit to enable operation in artificial or sunlight conditions. The IC can be paired with either an integrated proximity sensor or discrete pair solution.
