  • Good video, Alix. You're right, SSL isn't just LEDs, but a whole heckuva lot of it is. Just look at any late model automobile (if you want to go all the way, look at the Audi A8.) If you get a chance, check out OSRAM Opto Semiconductors' new micro-site at ledlight.osram-os.com. Regards, Charley

  • I have to agree with Roger above and add that the color quality of most LED bulbs leaves a lot to be desired. On the lifetime I can say from personal experience that LEDs are not lasting as long as predicted. You can find burned out LED in most traffic lights and half of the LED bulbs I put in my home 2 years ago are already dead or have lost most of their initial brightness. They offer great promise but there is still lots of room for improvement.

  • I agree that solid-state technology is the way of the future in lighting, BUT.... it's got a very long way to go before it becomes practical in most applications. One most important parameter that must be addressed is the cost. I was excited a couple of months ago to see an array of LED bulbs in standard Edison base forms selling at the local Ace Hardware electrical department for $10, only about 20 times what I could get a similar incandescent bulb for. I bought a couple of them to try. They work, but they're very dim, maybe a 25 watt equivalent at best. I like that they should last a very long time, but they fall far short of being equivalent or remotely cost-effective. The other LED bulbs I've seen are WAY too expensive to entice me to try them at around $70 for a PAR30 60 watt equivalent.

The D&D bracer is a fairly quick, fun, nerdy LilyPad project. The final product is a wearable bracer with a display that will randomly generate numbers between 1 and 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20, or 100 in response to arm movement, so it can effectively replace all of the dice in your bag for a D&D session.

Sustainable?
Sustainable?

I'd like some genius to define sustainable. Could we count something that we can keep doing for 100 billion years - beyond the death of the Universe as we currently understand such things - as sustainable? How about a billion years?
