The Controversial Viability of Solar

October 1, 2007 12:21 pm | Blogs | Comments

Energy News: CNN posted a very solid overview story about the state of solar power. The technology, if we lived in a proverbial vacuum, can already provide all the world's energy needs by installing panels in a small corner of the Sahara. But in the real world, cost and security are

SIDEBAR: Embed Thermoelectric Coolers

October 1, 2007 10:52 am | by Paul Magill, Ph.D., Nextreme | Articles | Comments

Thermocouples provide the key components of thermoelectric cooling modules. A thermocouple comprises a p-type and an n-type semiconductor element connected by a metal plate. Electrical connections at each end of the p- and n-type material complete an electric circuit. When a source supplies a current, thermoelectric cooling occurs. The thermocouple then "pumps" heat by cooling one side and heating the other by what is known as the Peltier effect.

Buck Regulators Feature Input Ranges up to 42V

October 1, 2007 4:49 am | Product Releases | Comments

National Semiconductor Corporation announced the addition of two new, high-efficiency Simple Switcher synchronous buck regulators to its PowerWise energy-efficient product family.  The highly integrated LM3102 and LM3103 are said to be the industry’s first synchronous buck regulators to feature an input voltage range up to 42V. The ICs are optimized for powering digital integrated circuits (ICs) in industrial and telecommunication applications. Integration of MOSFET switches and the use of small inductors enables a reduced system component count and very small solution size
