Design Platform Creates Displays

October 31, 2008 5:12 am | Product Releases | Comments

Having a layer of colored oil operating as an optical shutter, Liquavista’s ColorBright Liquidizer electrowetting design platform makes displays by generating a transparent channel to give selectable views of reflector designs and effects. The tool exhibits defining of segment shapes within the colored oil active area, selective fill, and a “hidden until ON” function to have the display match the color of the product casing until activated. The segmented cells offer reflectance of 40%, a contrast ratio of

On the Lightside: SID Mobile Displays Conference

October 30, 2008 11:48 am | by Alfred Poor, Contributing Editor | Articles | Comments

If Mae West were to deliver one of her most famous lines today, she might ask if you’ve got a portable consumer electronic device in your pocket. (And for the record, the original inquiry was about a gun, not a pickle as is widely misquoted.) Between our mobile phones, MP3 players, PNDs (portable navigation devices), and other indispensible gadgets, it’s a wonder that we’re not seeing pinstripe suits with cargo pants.

VHF-Band VCO Yields Low Phase Noise

October 30, 2008 11:43 am | Product Releases | Comments

Performing from 284 MHz to 294 MHz with a tuning voltage range from 0.30 VDC to 3 VDC, Z-Communications’ SMV0290A-LF VHF-band VCO exhibits a typical phase noise of -118 dBc/Hz at an offset of 10 KHz. The 0.30” × 0.30” × 0.08” SUB-L-packaged component delivers a typical output power of -1 dBm from a 3.30 VDC supply while drawing 17 mA (typ.) over

Vent Panel Prevents Fire from Spreading

October 30, 2008 11:12 am | Product Releases | Comments

Using a flame-retardant coating to expand and close honeycomb cells, Universal Air Filter’s PyroCide honeycomb vent panel keep fires that start within an electronics chassis from spreading any further. The component utilizes >95% open area for negligible resistance to air flow within an electronics cooling chassis in telecom and datacom equipment designed to meet

Frequency Inverter Employs Internal Disconnect Switch

October 30, 2008 10:37 am | Product Releases | Comments

Removing power to facilitate service and maintenance, Lenze-AC Tech’s SMVector NEMA 4X-enclosed frequency inverter utilizes an internal disconnect switch. The device presents a run/stop digital input, 3 programmable digital inputs (4 for 15 hp models or higher), a Form A relay, an open collector, an analog voltage input and output from 0 VDC to 10 VDC, and an analog current input from

Touchscreen Uses Projected Capacitive Touch

October 30, 2008 10:08 am | Ocular, Inc. | Product Releases | Comments

Showing no film deformations over time, Ocular’s Crystal Touch all-glass projected capacitive touchscreen works using a finger, styli, or a thin glove with the optical quality of a TFT or monochrome display. The scratch-resistant device exhibits auto calibration, a power input of 3 V, resolution of 3 million pixels max., operating temperature from -20°C to 75°C, storage temperature from

Connectors Fit in PCIe Architectures

October 30, 2008 9:37 am | Product Releases | Comments

Acting as point-to-point full duplex I/O bus connectors, ERNI Electronics’ X1, X4, X8, and X16 right-angled card edge connectors meet the requirements of PCIe architectures. The 1 mm centerline family provides board-to-board distances from 5.84 mm to 16.68 mm, compatibility with 1.6 mm to 2.4 mm thick motherboards and 1.6 mm thick daughter cards, and stack heights of

Ocean Vortices Could Lead to Long-term Renewable Energy

October 30, 2008 9:37 am | by by Jason Lomberg, Technical Editor | Blogs | Comments

A new technology aims to extract energy from that which covers 75% of the Earth— water. Michigan-based Vortex Hydro Energy is researching the natural motion of ocean currents; in particular, how currents interact with cylinders. Take offshore oil rigs, for example. When water impacts the cables that hold the platforms in place, it creates small vortices. When each vortex dissipates, it creates a vibration that poses a long-term risk to the rig’s structural integrity. But ocean engineer Michael Bernitsas, founder of Vortex Hydro, believes these vortices can be harnessed.
