Designed to operate with products such as the ADP5520 lighting management system and ADP5588 mobile I/O expander, the ADP8860 LED backlight driver from ANalog Devices has ambient light sensing, a programmable register set, and fading and dimming, which combine to reduce power dissipation by up to 50 percent. Accepting an input from 1.7 V to 3.3 V, the device has a parallel configuration enabling the control of up to seven LEDs – six at 30 mA max and one at 60 mA.
One city in Montana wants more than a job applicant's telephone number and address. Along with their job experience, city officials in Bozeman, Montana, are asking job seekers to provide passwords to social-network Web sites and other online groups to which they belong. Job applicants are being asked to sign a waiver that allows the city to not only check prior work experience, education and credit history, but also to check their social networks, blogs, and Internet chat rooms or forums.
Savvy consumers often go online for independent consumer reviews of products and services, scouring through comments from everyday Joes and Janes to help them find a gem or shun a lemon. What some fail to realize, though, is that such reviews can be tainted: Many bloggers have accepted perks such as free laptops, trips to Europe, $500 gift cards or even thousands of dollars for a 200-word post. Bloggers vary in how they disclose such freebies, if they do so at all. The practice has grown to the degree that the Federal Trade Commission is paying attention.
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been a hot topic in the TFT LCD market due to their rapid adoption in notebook PC displays and the high potential in LCD TV panels. In 2012, 34 billion LEDs will be used in TFT LCD backlights, in sizes ranging from 1” to more than 70”, up more than 300% from 8 billion in 2008
Accepting an input from 9 V to 75 V via a series resistor clamped with the device internal shunt regulator, the H-grade version of the LTC3803-3 current-mode flyback DC/DC controller from Linear Technology has an operating junction temperature from -40° C to 150° C.
Incorporating a white LED backlight and digital interface, the QVGA-resolution 3.5” diagonal OSD322427-6UFLWB LCD from OSD Displays has a maximum initial brightness of 800 cd/m2. Able to display 262k colors, the device interface is 24-bit digital RGB with VSYNC and HSYNC timing.
Rated at 2 A per contact, Harting's 3B and 3C DIN 4 16 12 product range of connectors for small PCBs contain 20 or 30 pins and have a 0.1-in. contact spacing.
Featuring a pre-assembled development board with an on-board OLED display for standalone testing, the Linx MDEV-GPS Master Development System contains everything needed to rapidly evaluate the company’s SG or SR Series GPS modules. The Eastman Kodak Co. announced Monday it's retiring its most senior film because of declining customer demand in an increasingly digital age. The world's first commercially successful color film, immortalized in song by Simon, spent 74 years in Kodak's portfolio.
With features such as parallel circuit configuration, a family of IP20 and IP66 LED drivers from American Ballast meet Energy Star specifications The drivers operate from 160 VAC to 304 VAC with a current accuracy level of 1 percent and load regulation of 3 percent.
An application does not have to be in the arctic or a desert waste to be considered operating in a harsh environment.
As the world begins to adjust to the mobile phone as a computing platform, we have to recognize the fact that for many people the device is bound to become the complete substitute for all computing needs. But not quite in the form we see it. I've written about this idea as far back as 1993, but this concept should be reexamined: We need to be in the right frame of mind for what's coming.

A new economic index paints a disheartening picture for technophiles — at least the ones inside corporate America. The Shift Index, developed by the Silicon Valley research unit of the consulting firm Deloitte, tracks a wide range of measures of economic performance, going back to 1965. But two numbers really jump out. The return on assets for United States companies has dropped by 75 percent over that span, while labor productivity has more than doubled.
