Lex Kosowsky In this episode of the Tinker's Toolbox, we talk to Lex Kosowsky of Shocking Technologies about their new XStatic polymer nano-composite for protecting electronic products from the effects of electrostatic discharge (ESD). The Voltage-Switchable Dielectric material is embedded in printed circuit boards or semiconductor packaging to significantly increase a product’s protection against harmful ESD events.

XStatic functions as an insulator during normal circuit operation and becomes conductive when the voltage increases beyond a predefined threshold. The material reverts back to an insulator after the voltage drops back below the threshold to normal operating levels.  The net result is that all ICs mounted on a board or substrate are shielded from ESD voltage spikes that would otherwise damage the chip .
